IWK surfs securely with AntiVir

The Institute for Training in Health and Geriatric Care (IWK) in Germany protects its network with anti-virus software from Avira
Tettnang, 22. August 2006 – The Avira anti-virus software at the Institute for Training in Health and Geriatric Care (IWK) ensures the necessary protection during surfing on the Internet and when working with the web-based groupware – simply, unobtrusively and securely. With 16 locations, the IWK is the leading vocational training providers in the health and social sector in Germany. 3,500 students, 112 employees and more than 750 independent instructors have free access to the Internet at all times – a generous offering, but one which engenders difficult-to-control conditions in terms of security. To ensure that only valuable information and no viruses or worms are downloaded from the net during surfing, the IWK uses the AntiVir protection software from Avira.
The IWK, headquartered in Delmenhorst, is a very ambitious and progressive educational institution with regard to IT and telecommunications, at which a complex IT structure has grown over the years. "The heterogeneous network caused us increasing security problems. The anti-virus solution which we used previously did not offer sufficient protection. The licence conditions for us as a school was also unclear with the previous software," says Markus Singmann, IT co-ordinator at the IWK, describing the initial situation. Consequently, a simple, clear and permanent solution for the protection of personal details, for keeping malware from the network and for providing complete protection of servers and clients had to be found. An important factor was also that the software had to be administered decentrally.
"We took a very close look at the most widely-used security providers. Most of them offer similar functionalities, so that ultimately, it was the personal consulting which convinced us to opt for Avira," adds Singmann. "While other manufacturers merely referred us to local specialist dealers, Avira impressed us with their professional, German-speaking consulting and support team. The team supported us throughout implementation, and today, it is still available for queries."
"Owing to our dedicated line to the Internet and the high number of users, the IWK is under constant attack from malware. In an environment such as this, ongoing updates of the anti-virus software are of paramount importance," explains Gernot Hacker, security expert and assistant general manager of Avira. "AntiVir accomplishes this task by means of automatic updates. And through the single-file update and the incremental VDF update, this process is performed quickly and simply in the background – without any intervention from the IT administrators."
