Reset: tamper-proof PC systems
Tue, 24 July 2007
Avira WinRollBack protects hard drive partitions against unwanted manipulations Tettnang, 24 July 2007 – Avira extends its range with solutions for data recovery. During a restart, Avira WinRollBack resets the sectors of protected hard drive partitions to their original state by automatic recovery. The software is particularly suitable for public organizations such as universities, schools and libraries where computers are accessible to many, usually anonymous users. Avira WinRollBack also is also useful for re-configuration of terminals, kiosk systems or notebooks.
The solution is based on the HDD sector encapsulation technology of Avira. On the supported systems Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the product requires only 25 per cent free hard drive space and two available hard drive partitions. On one of these, Avira WinRollBack carries out all changes during operation so that the protected partition remains intact. After a system restart, all changes made during the last section are undone. The system is restarted in its original state and is therefore available again in the (pre-)defined constellation and with the full scope of functions.
With Avira WinRollBack, each partition of a hard drive can be protected with a password. Sectors protected by Avira WinRollBack can only be changed or released again by authorized persons with administration rights. Certain directories can also be excluded from protection by Avira WinRollBack, so that users can both change and store data in defined folders. The computer system continues running with the recovery software without a loss of performance and does not restrict users in their work. Multi-boot environments are also supported.
“The advantages of such a solution are obvious. The recovery software guarantees the integrity of the system, because a computer system protected in such a way is tamper-proof”, explains Tjark Auerbach, the founder and CEO of Avira. “Unauthorized software cannot be permanently installed and malware has no chance either. As the computer is also booted in the defined original state, system support and help desk services that would be required for a re-configuration are no longer necessary.” The security expert also points out a further aspect: “The software supports a uniform security policy for consistent, central data back-ups in networks.”
Avira WinRollBack is now available with an unlimited license period for EUR 39.95 (incl. VAT) from the Avira online shop: http://www.avira.com/en/onlineshop/index.html?id_categ=15 In addition to the solutions UnErase, WebProtector, DriveNet, CIA Commander and NTFS4DOS, Avira WinRollBack is among the tools of the new data recovery product family of Avira.
